What Is Emu Oil?
Emu oil is rendered from the fat of the emu bird, native to Australia. Indigenous Australians used it for centuries to soothe irritated skin, reduce discomfort from sun exposure, and moisturize in harsh climates. Today, it's one of the most studied natural oils in dermatology — and one of the most recommended by foot care specialists.
Why It Penetrates Differently Than Other Oils
Most plant-based oils — coconut oil, olive oil, even shea butter — sit on top of the skin. They form a barrier that traps moisture in, which is valuable, but they don't carry that moisture into deeper layers of the skin.
Emu oil is different. Its fatty acid composition closely mirrors human sebum (the skin's own oil), which means the skin doesn't treat it as a foreign substance. Instead, it absorbs rapidly and carries other beneficial ingredients along with it into the lower layers of the epidermis.
This is particularly important for foot care, where the skin is often thickened and calloused — creating a barrier that most surface moisturizers can't penetrate effectively.
The Science Behind the Claims
Emu oil is rich in oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid — the same essential fatty acids your skin uses to maintain its barrier function. Research has found that these fatty acids support:
- Skin hydration at the dermal level (not just the surface)
- Reduction of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — a key marker of skin barrier health
- Skin comfort in areas of irritation or sensitivity
It also has a non-comedogenic rating of 0-1, meaning it won't clog pores — making it suitable even for sensitive or acne-prone skin when used on the body.
Why It Matters for Foot Care
Feet take a daily beating. The skin on the heel is among the thickest on the body, and standard moisturizers often don't penetrate deeply enough to produce lasting results. Emu oil's ability to move through thickened skin makes it uniquely effective for:
- Dry, cracked heels
- Callused skin on the ball of the foot
- Diabetic foot care (under the guidance of a healthcare provider)
- Post-pedicure maintenance
This is why podiatrists who carry natural foot care products often look specifically for formulas that include emu oil as an active ingredient — not just a marketing claim.
How We Use It at Shea Butter Heaven®
Both our Absolutely Fabulous Feet® Foot Cream and our Pure Emu Oil are formulated with emu oil at therapeutic levels — not a trace amount added for label appeal.
The foot cream pairs emu oil with lactic acid for gentle exfoliation and shea butter for occlusive protection. The result is a formula that works on the surface and beneath it, which is why customers who've tried dozens of foot creams keep coming back to this one.
If you've never tried emu oil as part of your foot care routine, start with a small amount applied to clean, dry heels at night. Cover with cotton socks and wake up to noticeably softer skin within a few days.
